Kluane Socks

The Kluane Socks are inspired by Kluane National Park in Yukon Territory, Canada, home to Canada’s highest peak amid a rugged mountainous landscape only a few degrees of latitude south of the Arctic Circle. In Kluane National Park, hiking through the wilderness is a common activity for outdoor enthusiasts who visit the park, and this Mystery Sock follows one of the more extensive, very picturesque hiking trails in the park… without ever having to leave the comfort of your climate-controlled knitting location. (That’s my kind of backcountry camping trip!) Find out more about Kluane here.

These toe-up socks feature a cable motif that transitions into texture and finally a short-row colourwork section for a beautiful and unique finished product. They feature a gusset and heel flap construction, with a 2x2 ribbed cuff. Corresponding written instructions are provided for the charts.

This pattern is available in three foot circumferences and the socks are adjustable in length and height. It requires the knitter to be able to knit a small circumference in the round, and the pattern is method-neutral to suit your preferred technique for socks — double-pointed needles, magic loop/one circular needle, two circular needles, short circular needle, etc. Working two-at-a-time is possible.

This pattern looks best in a semi-solid or speckled colourway as the Main Colour. A busy colourway that pools will obscure the cable pattern details, and the gusset-and-heel-flap construction will break up self-striping and gradient colourways. Any style of colourway will work as the Contrast Colour, as long as it contrasts well with the Main Colour. Great for leftovers and miniskeins!

This pattern has lots of helpful resources, including links to fully-captioned video tutorials and detailed stitch abbreviation descriptions.

This pattern was originally designed as a nature-themed Mystery Knit-A-Long Sock for the Sock Knitters Anonymous group on Ravelry in March 2026. Therefore, while there is only a single pattern file, it is organized into four "clues" within the document.
