Quasar Socks

The Quasar Socks are inspired by quasars, which are extremely luminous quasi-stellar objects that emit massive amounts of energy. Quasars occur when a supermassive black hole at the centre of a galaxy is surrounded by a gaseous accretion disc. Gas in the disc falling towards the black hole heats up and releases massive amounts of energy across the electromagnetic spectrum, including visible light, radio waves, x-rays, and cosmic rays. Put some intensely-visible rays on your feet, too, with these fun socks!

These toe-up socks combine chains of contrast-colour elongated stitches with beads to create a truly unique effect that travels from the toe, up the instep, into the gussets, and onto the front of the leg. On the heel flap and back of the leg, more single-strand intarsia mirrors the front of the sock without the bead embellishments. Both socks are worked identically. The socks have a traditional gusset and heel flap heel that uses German short rows for the turn, and a twisted-rib cuff that flows smoothly from the leg patterning.

This pattern is available in three foot circumferences and the socks are completely adjustable in length and height. This pattern requires the knitter to be able to knit a small circumference in the round (the pattern is method-neutral to suit your preferred technique for socks — double-pointed needles, magic loop/one circular needle, two circular needles, short circular needle, etc. — and they can be worked two-at-a-time, albeit with some yarn management challenges) and explains all techniques required. Corresponding written instructions are provided for all charts. This pattern has some unusual techniques and reading the cable descriptions carefully is essential, so it is best-suited to an experienced sock knitter who is looking to try something new and interesting.

These socks are best suited for a solid or semi-solid colourway of yarn. The Contrast Colours should contrast well with the Main Colour. Because of the heel style, I do not recommend self-striping or continuous gradient yarns for the Main Colour. Since the strands of Contrast Colour are very short, they also work best in solid or semi-solid colourways.
